ABC Life Literacy Canada Is releasing new resources aimed at educating Canadians on online fraud.
In 2022, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center Fraud and cybercrime have been reported in total, with victims losing a total of C$530 million. This is an increase of almost 40 percent from 2021. Furthermore, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center found that fraud is rarely reported, estimating that only five to 10 percent of people report it.
ABC Life Literacy Canada is focusing its new resources on internet safety ABC Internet Mattersis a program sponsored by the Canadian Bankers Association that provides introductory digital literacy education for adults who need help strengthening their digital skills, and older Canadians who are not comfortable using the Internet.
New ABC Internet Matters resources include a website security checklist, which outlines how to identify a safe and secure website. Fact sheets on urgent pop-ups, along with advice on how to deal with them, are also included in the resources. There are three video lesson plans on topics such as creating strong passwords and how to identify spam email.
“Since the pandemic, there has been an astonishing increase in the number of fraud cases and online scams,” says Alison Howard, executive director of ABC Life Literacy Canada. “We are grateful for the support of the Canadian Bankers Association, which enabled us to create much needed resources that help educate Canadians about online fraud, and ultimately how to use the internet safely.”
The company said that additional resources will also be added throughout the year.
