Manchester United confirmed on Tuesday that Cristiano Ronaldo would be leaving the club by mutual agreement with immediate effect. It comes after days of speculation following Ronaldo’s explosive interview with British journalist Piers Morgan.

The club thanked the legend for his immense contribution, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances in two spells at Old Trafford, and wished him and his family all the best for the future.

“Everyone at Manchester United is focused on continuing to progress the team under Erik ten Haag and working together to deliver success on the pitch,” the club said.

Ronaldo’s future with the club was over after a public outcry against the side and manager Erik ten Haag. During his interview, Ronaldo accused the club of ‘betraying’ him and said manager Erik ten Haag showed a ‘lack of respect’ by patting him on the back.

Following this, Manchester United said on Friday that it had taken appropriate steps in response to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent media interview. It had said, “We will not be commenting further until this process reaches its conclusion.”

The development comes two days before Portugal’s opening FIFA World Cup match against Ghana in Qatar.
