A student builds an app to locate essays written by ChatGPT, Louisiana law requires users to undergo age verification to access porn, and scalpers struggle to sell RTX 4080 GPUs.
This is all the tech news that is trending right now. Welcome to trending hashtags. It’s Thursday, January 5th, and I’m your host, Samira Balsara.
Business Insider reports that Edward Tian, a Princeton student, created GPTZero, an app that aims to determine whether essays were written with AI programs like ChatGPT. GPTZero scores the text on its “confusion and burstiness”—a measure of how complex it is and how haphazardly it is written. In a Twitter demonstration, Tian compared the app’s analysis to a New Yorker article and a letter written by ChatGPT. It correctly identified that they were written by a human and an AI, respectively. Tian said he wanted to build GPTZero after seeing an increase in AI plagiarism. Tian’s app became so popular that the website hosting the app crashed due to high traffic but is still available for use on Tian’s Streamlit page.

PCMag reported that Louisiana law now requires users to undergo age verification before accessing porn. Websites with 33 percent or more pornographic content are required to verify the age of their users using a government-issued form of identification. The new law, HB 142—introduced last year by Rep. Laurie Schlegel—prohibits anyone under the age of 18 from viewing porn and holds websites that readily supply it accountable. While users can use a VPN to hide their location and use a fake ID, websites can reduce the content percentage under legal limits. The idea, introduced a few years ago in the UK, was eventually scrapped due to privacy and data protection concerns.

Scalpers are struggling to resell the RTX 4080 GPU, Videocardz reported. The RTX 4080, a high-end, high-priced GPU, has been struggling to appeal to gaming enthusiasts and Nvidia since its launch. Nothing more affordable appeared even after its launch, and instead NVIDIA canceled the cheaper $899 RTX 4080 12GB model, leaving both available RTX 40 GPUs in the $1200+ price range. This hasn’t paid off for scalpers, who are now left with the option of selling the GPU at the manufacturer’s suggested retail price or sending it back to the retailer and incurring shipping and restocking fees. Videocardz said the problem of card returns has become so widespread that some retailers are now removing the option to apply for a refund.

Randall Reed, a 28-year-old black man, was accused of stealing a $10,000-worth of Chanel and Louis Vuitton bags and arrested in a New Orleans suburb while on his way to Thanksgiving dinner with his mother. The crime scene was in Louisiana, three states and seven hours away. The police needed only facial recognition equipment to make an arrest and jail Reid for a week, which incorrectly identified Reid as a suspect. The technology, although useful, doesn’t perfect or justify arrests, Gizmodo explained. According to several studies, the technology is particularly inaccurate when identifying people of color. Police officers acknowledge this fact but there are few rules governing the use of the technology.
