Tik Tok’s rival Chingari from India has launched a content monetization plan for creators and its users. The daily, weekly and monthly plans cost Rs 20, Rs 30 and Rs 100 respectively. The move will help the creators community double their earnings through its ‘Gari’ mining program, the company said in a statement.
Additionally, it will also allow users to withdraw money from the app and deposit it directly into their banks. The company claims that they will get “real cash”.
The Gari Mining Program is an initiative that enables individuals to create content, upload it to the platform, and then earn rewards in the form of crypto tokens.
Sumit Ghosh, co-founder and CEO of Chingari, said that monetizing content remains a “serious challenge for millions of creators”, but the move will make the space more accessible to anyone wanting to get involved.
He also added, “This is another step towards democratizing the maker economy where even micro and nano-influencers from Tier II and Tier III cities of India can monetize their content at minimal cost.”
The short video sharing platform was started in 2018 by Ghosh and Vishwatma Nayak. The Bengaluru-based start-up was one of the 24 winners of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Atmanirbhar Bharat app innovation challenge. This was observed after China’s Byte Dance-owned Tik Tok was banned in India in 2020.
The app was described as India’s answer to the Chinese company. Moreover, it saw so much traffic after the ban that it crashed several times. Modi had also praised the app in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address to the nation in the same year.
Chingari currently has five million daily active users and 40 million monthly active users. It is available in 15 languages ββand has been downloaded over 170 million times on the Play Store so far. More than 200 million videos are viewed daily on the Chingari app.
